5 Reasons Your Website Is Losing Customers (And How to Fix Them)
Most business websites quietly drive customers away. Here are the five most common mistakes we see — and exactly how to fix each one.
Your website is working against you
Every day, potential customers land on your website and leave without contacting you. Sometimes it's obvious why — sometimes it's subtle. Here are the five patterns we see most often when auditing business websites.
1. It loads too slowly
Studies show that 53% of mobile users abandon a site that takes more than 3 seconds to load. Google also uses page speed as a ranking factor, so slow sites get penalised twice — fewer visitors and fewer conversions from the ones who do arrive.
Fix it:
- Compress all images (use WebP format)
- Remove unused plugins and scripts
- Use a CDN (Cloudflare is free)
- Enable browser caching
- Test your speed at PageSpeed Insights
2. The mobile experience is broken
Over 70% of web traffic in India comes from mobile devices. If your site requires pinching, zooming, or horizontal scrolling on a phone, you're losing the majority of your visitors.
Fix it:
- Use a responsive design framework
- Test on real devices, not just browser DevTools
- Make buttons at least 44px tall — finger-friendly
- Use readable font sizes (minimum 16px body text)
3. There's no clear call-to-action
Visitors arrive at your site and don't know what to do next. Should they call you? Fill a form? WhatsApp you? If there are five different options with equal visual weight, most people choose none.
Fix it:
- One primary CTA per page, prominently placed
- Use action language: "Get a free quote" not "Contact us"
- Repeat the CTA above the fold AND at the bottom
- Make it visually distinct (contrasting button color)
4. There's no social proof
People trust other people more than they trust businesses. If your website has no reviews, testimonials, case studies, or logos of clients you've worked with, visitors have no reason to believe your claims.
Fix it:
- Add 3–5 genuine client testimonials with names and photos
- Show "as featured in" or client logos if applicable
- Add your Google review rating badge
- Write one detailed case study showing real results
5. The copy is about you, not them
"We are a leading digital marketing company with 10 years of experience and a passionate team committed to excellence." This type of copy is on thousands of websites. It's about the company — not about what the customer gets.
Fix it:
- Lead with the customer's problem, not your credentials
- Use "you" more than "we"
- Be specific: "We build websites that rank on Google and convert visitors into paying customers"
- Add proof: numbers, results, timelines
If your website has even two of these five problems, you're likely losing a significant percentage of your potential clients. The good news: all of these are fixable, usually within a week of focused work.
